Krisi and Anthony Frost, Thalabah Merinos, Crookwell with buyers Daniel and Josh Olsson, Goulburn, property manager Nathan Selmes, Rick Power, Nutrien Ag Solutions and Chick Olsson, Royal Oak, Goulburn.

Reserve rams and show ewes were penned beside the 60 Merino rams offered for sale by the Williams' and Frost families, Thalabah Merino stud, Crookwell today.

Obviously the show sheep haven't been seen in public due to the COVID-19 social restrictions: but in common with many ram sales this season they were on display as an indication of the stud's continual genetic progress.

The Williams' and Frost families pride themselves on producing a large framed, well covered sheep with bulky, bright soft-handling medium to medium-fine wool.

The average figures across the draft of 60 rams in the sale was 20.24m, 3.3 SD, and 99.3pc CF.

"We are progressing here at Thalabah, but we haven't lost sight of the true Thalabah type and breeding an article that fits into the current sheep and wool industries," Mrs Kristen Frost said.

The auction realised a top price of $9000 bought by the Olsson family, Royal Oak, Goulburn with an overall sale average of $2408 from the 60 rams sold.

The sale average was $1000 up on last year.

Speaking after the sale, Mrs Frost said her family were overwhelmed by the response to their breeding aspirations by loyal clients.

"It was above our expectations," she said.

"It is good to see that our use of the top shelf genetics available in the industry which we have accessed is being recognised and is paying off.

"But we know we have a long way to go because you can never stop improving.

"We felt it was a very even presentation, especially as the rams had grown through a very tough season and we were happy with the body weights."

The auction was settled by Nutrien, Crookwell, with Rick Power taking the bids.

"It was exciting to be able to judge sheep like these," Mr Mathews said when talking about the grand and reserve grand champion rams.

"The Langdene ram had a bit more purity of wool, and although the Thalabah ram was a magnificent sheep, the grand champion just had the edge.

"They are each something the industry can be proud of."

Mr Mathews complimented the breeders and noted the Thalabah-bred ewe was the 'complete package with a very good back end."

"Have a look at the way she is put together," he advised the spectators.

"She is feminine, well balanced and a very productive ewe."

"This ram has got an exceptionally long staple, with brightness and softness we want in our wool," judge Rodger Mathews explained.

"I liked the pure white lustrous wool and he is very sound structurally - a very smart ram.."

"He was the only exhibit, but he is a very correct sheep, so square and good on his feet and carrying a lot of wool."

The Poll Merino ewe grand championship was awarded to the two-tooth ewe exhibited by the Nerstane stud over the reserve which had been paraded by Chris Clonan, Alfoxton stud, Armidale.

Jock McLaren, Nerstane, Woolbrook, exhibited the grand champion fine-medium Poll Merino ewe sashed by Paul Dooley, Tamworth.

Judge Rodger Mathews was very impressed with the quality of all exhibits in the fine-medium wool section but noted the productivity of the grand champion ewe..

"At this level it is exciting to see the phenomenal staple length and high quality wool," he said.

"She is not a big ewe, but is very productive."

Mr Mathews said the Alfoxton-bred ewe was also a very productive sheep with great breeding potential, but on the day she was beaten by a sheep with a high quality fleece.

Donna Kopp, Towonga, Peak Hill sashing the grand champion medium wool ram exhibited by Hamish McLaren, Nerstane, Woolbrook.

Twenty-four Merino and Poll Merino rams and ewes were paraded before judge Garry Kopp, Towonga, Peak Hill, in the medium wool section of the 2021 Sydney Royal Merino Sheep Show.

Nevertheless, Mr Kopp was suitably impressed with the quality of all entries and noted it wasn't an easy task deliberating on placegetters.

He awarded the ram grand championship to the six-tooth March-shorn ram exhibited by Hamish and Jock McLaren, Nerstane, Woolbrook.

"He is an outstanding sheep and is carrying a very stylish fleece on a big body," Mr Kopp said.

Mr Kopp said the reserve grand champion, exhibited by Ken Wolf, Hollow Mount, Bigga, and coming from the March-shorn four tooth class was unlucky to come up against a very good ram.

The grand champion ewe, graduating from the two-teeth March-shorn class was exhibited by Anthony and Krisi Frost, Thalabah, Laggan.

"She has great balance, width and shape," Mr Kopp said.

"And although she is still only a junior, she is carrying a long stapled and soft medium wool."

In the Poll Merino section, the ram grand championship was awarded to Doug Walker, Wongara, Old Junee, for his August-shorn two tooth, while the reserve grand champion was shown by Chris Clonan, Alfoxton, Armidale.

"It is unreal to see two shortwools go over a long wool but the grand champion has a magnificent structure, with great neck extension while his wool oozes quality - he will grow into an exceptional ram," Mr Kopp said.

Chris Croker, Ayrston, Golspie, with John Williams, Kristen and Anthony Frost, all of Thalabah, Laggan, and auctioneer, Rick Power, Landmark, Boorowa.

A trial a few years ago with some old semen on a handful of ewes has paid off for the Thalabah stud at Laggan.

The semen was from the 1988 national champion ram, Koonwarra 321, bred by John Williams, then of Koonwarra and now of Thalabah, and the breeding program produced five lambs from that sire, with one ram offered for sale.

That one ram topped the stud's on-property sale on Friday at $5200 when sold to Chris and Stephanie Croker, Ayrston, Golspie.

The May 2018-drop 20.1-micron ram had a 3.2-micron standard deviation, coefficient of variation of 15.8 per cent and comfort factor 99.5pc.

Mr Williams said its sire was bred from the Merryville Uniform sire line and its dam was of Glendonald blood.

The ram was a clear favourite among bidders with the next highest price being $3000 in a sale where 54 of the 60 lots were cleared at auction to average $1541.

Chris and Stephanie Croker, Ayrston, Golspie, who have used Thalabah rams for about 20 years, bought the sale topper to use in their flock of a couple of thousand ewes.

"I was looking for a good body, with plenty of width and length and depth and plenty of wool on it," said Mr Croker.

He said the Thalabah sheep cut a lot of wool and also produced a good carcase.

"They mature early if you want to sell the wether portion as lambs, or you can grow them out with good weights in your wethers at two years of age," Mr Croker said.

The 321 son was one of five horned rams the Crokers bought to average $2880.

"The rams this year were better grown and the wool was better," he said.

"They're making moves here that are meeting today's requirements in the wool and meat markets."

Auctioneer Rick Power, Landmark Boorowa, said most buyers were after "well-made sheep, with good wool that measures well".

"People can see the investment that Thalabah is making back into the stud and what it is producing," he said.

This included the artificial insemination program using semen from a rams from Langdene, Dunedoo, and from Greenfields, Willalo, South Australia, plus rams purchased from Rangeview, Darkan, WA, Glendonald, Nhill, Victoria, and Alfoxton, Armidale.

Thalabah's investment was well supported by Victorian buyer, Leigh Watts, St Arnaud, who attended with his agent, Damian Drum, Landmark St Arnaud, and bought five rams to top at $3000 and average $2140.

His family's property, Springdale, includes 2428 hectares, running about 2200 commercial ewes and had been reasonably lucky with the season.

Based in a 432 millimetre rainfall area, Mr Watts said the farm had 279mm for the year so far, most of which fell in the growing season.

Mr Watts, a Thalabah client of 34 years, runs Springdale with his brothers, Peter and David, in a family partnership.

He said they used Thalabah rams for their soft, productive wool and ability to keep the water out and was pleased with their performance in his operation, having shorn 200 more sheep this year which produced an extra 26 bales of wool.

Mr Watts expects the sheep market to remain buoyant due to the lack of numbers and demand for protein in Asia on the back of the African swine flu.

Two of the passed-in lots were sold straight after the sale.

The selling agent was Landmark Crookwell.
